Find Your Path
/ Find your path

Six questions. One clear direction.

Most newcomers don't know whether to aim for facilities, power, networks, construction, compute or the commercial side. Answer honestly and we'll recommend the paths that fit, explain why, and show you the openings and guides for each.

Question 1 of 6

Where are you starting from?

All 8 paths: Facilities & critical operations · Power & electrical · Mechanical & cooling · Network & fiber · Construction & commissioning · Cloud, compute & GPU systems · Energy, grid & sustainability · Commercial & business. Answers are stored anonymously to improve the guidance.

/ Early career

Openings you can actually get.

Internships, apprenticeships, graduate programs and roles that ask for little or no experience, separated from senior positions. Eligibility is assessed from the employer's own listing text: titles, years-of-experience statements and early-talent labels.

/ Skills gap & training plan

Turn “not qualified yet” into a plan.

Choose a live listing. We pull the skills the employer asks for, separate essentials from nice-to-haves, and you tick what you already have. Everything left becomes a training plan with a concrete next step for each skill.

Skills are detected from the employer's listing text and may miss items written in unusual ways. Always read the full listing before applying.

/ Application prep

Explain your strengths without overstating them.

Role-specific résumé guidance, interview practice with what the interviewer is actually listening for, and examples of how experience from other industries transfers into data centers.

Résumé guidance · Data center operations

  • · Show shift reliability: attendance, 24/7 environments, escalation experience.
  • · Call out any procedure-driven work (checklists, MOPs, lockout/tagout).
  • · List equipment you have touched: UPS, generators, chillers, PDUs, BMS screens.
  • · Include physical readiness and willingness to work rotating shifts.

Applies to every role

  • · Lead with a two-line summary that names the path you want (e.g. critical facilities) and the proof you have, even if it comes from another industry.
  • · Quantify everything: MW or kW you supported, tickets closed per shift, uptime maintained, budget managed, cables terminated.
  • · Mirror the exact terms in the listing (UPS, BMS, commissioning, Kubernetes) only where you can genuinely speak to them in an interview.
  • · List certifications and safety training in their own section; hiring managers scan for OSHA, NFPA 70E, EPA 608, CCNA and similar first.

How your experience transfers

Military (Navy nukes, Air Force power production, Army generator mechanics)
Watch-standing, procedures and equipment ownership map directly to facilities operations.
HVAC, electrical or plumbing trades
Hands-on plant knowledge; add critical-environment procedures and you are hireable.
Hospital, manufacturing or hotel facilities
You already run 24/7 buildings; data centers add tighter redundancy and change control.

Day in the life · Critical Facilities Technician

A 12-hour shift on the facilities floor

  1. 06:00Shift turnover: review overnight alarms, open work orders and any vendor visits scheduled.
  2. 07:30Rounds through electrical and mechanical rooms; log UPS, generator and chiller readings against expected ranges.
  3. 11:00Escort a vendor performing generator maintenance; verify each step against the approved MOP.
  4. 15:00A cooling alarm trips in one hall. Follow the EOP, confirm redundancy is carrying load, notify the shift lead, document.
  5. 18:00Turnover to nights: open items, what changed, what to watch.

Reliability comes from discipline, not drama. Procedures, communication and attention to detail matter more than raw technical brilliance.

Day in the life · Data Center Technician & Network Engineer

Turn-up week for a new GPU cluster

  1. Day 1Racks arrive pre-integrated. Technicians verify power, position and labels against the build document.
  2. Day 2Fiber and InfiniBand cabling terminated and tested; every failed optic or cable is logged and swapped.
  3. Day 3Network engineers bring up the fabric, validate link speeds and error counts.
  4. Day 4Platform team images nodes, runs burn-in and GPU diagnostics; hardware faults go back to the technicians.
  5. Day 5Cluster handed to the customer with a full inventory and known-issues list.

Hardware, network and software teams depend on each other. Technicians who understand the layer above them get promoted.

Day in the life · Project Engineer & Commissioning Engineer

Six months before turnover on a hyperscale build

  1. Month 6Switchgear and generators arrive; project engineers track submittals and coordinate crane picks.
  2. Month 4Level 2 and 3 commissioning: verify installation and start up each system individually.
  3. Month 2Level 4 functional testing; deficiencies tracked daily with contractors.
  4. Month 1Integrated Systems Test: simulate utility loss and prove the facility rides through on generators.
  5. TurnoverDocumentation package handed to operations; punch list closed; customer begins move-in.

Construction roles are the fastest-growing entry point as new campuses break ground. Schedule literacy and calm under pressure are the currency.
